Jammu and Kashmir Minister of State for Education and PDP leader Gulam Nabi Lone was on Monday killed when heavily armed terrorists attacked his house in the high security Tulsibagh area.

Two security personnel and a terrorist were also killed and a civilian injured in the attack which took place at around 9 am.

Officials said two heavily armed terrorists firing indiscriminately and lobbing grenades first tried to enter the house of CPI (M) MLA Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami.

After being challenged by security personnel there, they barged into the neighbouring house of Lone and killed him.

Sixty two-year-old Lone, who represented Sangrama Assembly constituency, was a doctor by profession and joined active politics during the last elections.

Tarigami, meanwhile, put the blame of the attack on tardy security measures.

"They managed to enter what is regarded as a high security zone with big guns without being frisked. This reflects severe lax in security," he said.

He said he was leaving his residence in the morning when he heard gunfire. It seems they (terrorists) tried to enter both the houses.

He said a terrorist's body with a gun in his hand was still lying near his house and no senior officials have so far reached the spot.

Union Minister of State for Home SP Jaiswal described the incident as "unfortunate". He, however, refused to comment further, saying the details about the attack were awaited.
