Two militants and a soldier were killed in a gun battle that broke out on Friday between militants and security forces in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

The soldier has been identified as Naik Satish Kumar.
Security forces launched an anti-militancy operation in the Boban Watsar forest of Handwara in Kupwara after information that three to four heavily armed militants were in the area.
“Continuing its relentless operations against the terrorists, the Army and JKP launched an operation in Boban Watsar forest, Handwara, on receiving information about the presence of some terrorists.
As the forces closed in, they drew fire from the terrorists, resulting in the death of one soldier, Naik Satish Kumar, and injury to another. In the ensuing gun battle, the army killed two terrorists,’’ said a Srinagar-based spokesman. The army also confirmed that another soldier was injured in the operation.
Besides other warlike stores, two AK series of weapons, one UBGL (under barrel grenade launcher), and five radio sets were recovered in the operation that was continuing till the time this report was filed.
The incident came after an infiltration attempt along the LoC in Poonch sector on Thursday evening — three terrorists were gunned down then.
