GOVERNOR Balram Jakhar on Wednesday inaugurated a parthenium awareness programme on the premises of Central Institute of Agricultural Engineering (CIAE).
Union Minister of State for Agriculture Kanitlal Bhuria was the guest of honour at the function while Deputy Director General , ICAR, (Natural Resources Management) Dr J S Verma presided over it.
The programme was organised by the National Research Centre for Weed Science, Jabalpur. Governor Dr Balram Jakhar emphasised the need to enact strict laws to ensure that all individuals and the administration worked for eradication of Parthenium from their respective areas.
Weed Centre’s Director Dr Jay G Varshney made a brief presentation on invasion of parthenium in India, its spread, the losses caused due to it and its ill effect on human beings and animals besides the biodiversity.
Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) Deputy Director General Dr JS Sharma stressed the importance of energy and water requirement and role of fertilisers in increasing the agricultural productivity as well as farmer’s income.
Bhuria said weeds are a big problem in agriculture which reduced the crop yields up to 85 percent and controlling the weeds can contribute an additional 179.6 million tones to agricultural productivity.
On the occasion three publications on Parthenium management including a video film were released. Director, CIAE, Dr MM Pandey, proposed the vote of thanks.
