During this yatra meetings were organized in 20 villages in which quarry labourers, farmers, females and students participated revealing the kind of water that they are forced to use under severe compulsions.
Inhabitants of 'Gulrahee', 'Hadhee', 'Kathha', 'Bheenj' and 'Juhi' villages narrated their woes when during summer hanpumps and wells go dry. Startling was the revelation that recently a girl child died due to unavailability of drinking water in her area.
The Yatra, aimed to inspire people to rejuvenate neglected ponds, construct new ponds, barrage and barriers to avoid wastage of rainwater, covered 15 villages in its three-day schedule. Panchayats of various villages assured to cooperate in this task by contributing their labour free of cost. Till now 30 ponds, 80 wells and 12 empty quarries have been identified for undertaking water conservation activities. Also people showed their commitment to store water from river and other natural resources which until now went waste. This day they would be doing on their own initiative using both traditional and modern knowledge, individually, collectively and in co-ordination with government and non-government agencies.
The first stage of this Yatra to be completed on Tuesday will be led by the District Magistrate of Allahabad. The teachers of Allahabad University, scientists from National Science Academy and representatives from NGOs will also be present on this occasion. Dr Sunit Singh of the GB Pant Institute is co-ordinating the programme.
