Jamia proctor Rocket Ibrahim resigns
Jamia Milia Islamia, closed for the last eight days following large-scale violence over admissions, will reopen on Thursday as proctor Rocket Ibrahim, facing students' ire, stepped down from his post.
Vice Chancellor Mushirul Hasan lifted the sine die closure and declared the university open from Thursday but students continued the relay hunger strike demanding his resignation and action against Ibrahim.
Hasan appealed to students to withdraw their agitation and convey their grievances to the Dean, Students' Welfare.
A university statement said Ibrahim had stepped down from office "to facilitate the inquiry into the violent incidents" at the campus on last Tuesday.
Prof Masood Alam has been asked to look after the Proctorial Department.
Jamia witnessed large-scale violence on Tuesday last after outgoing Chairman of the Students' Union Shams Pervez tried to meet Vice Chancellor Mushirul Hasan for admission of some people who the varsity authorities claim were "known trouble makers."
The students had claimed that the proctor had pointed a gun at them after they insisted on meeting Hasan after being turned away.
The university had begun its stalled admission process on Monday.
An inquiry by a retired High Court judge into the violence at the campus has also been ordered.
