Kotwali police said that the burglars struck at shops of Raju Soni and Salim Sheikh located some distance apart in a narrow alley of Chandramohan Market near Sarafa Chowk. Soni’s shop ‘Soni Dice’ and Salim’s shop ‘Salim Danewala’ were burgled and the theft was detected in the morning when the shop owners arrived to open their respective shops.

The thieves have stolen the safe from Soni’s shop. It weighed about one quintal and, therefore, it is being surmised the number of thieves must have been about six or seven. The safe contained gold jewellery items worth about Rs 28,000. Besides, the thieves also took away cash of Rs 20,000.

From Salim’s shop, the culprits stole 20 gold bangles, a gold locket, and some earrings. The total booty stolen from there amounted to almost Rs 90,000, police said.

Kotwali TI Suhas Dravid said the work appeared to be of someone known to the shop owners. Both shops are separated by some vacant sites that are still under construction. Besides, the theft was carried out on Sunday night, when the entire market is closed down.

Police have registered a case of theft under Sections 457 and 380 of the IPC. Identity of the culprits or their exact number were, however, still unknown and police did not have any lead into the theft till the filing of this report. Further investigations were on in the matter.
