The girl’s family told police that a man who lived in the same village started teasing the girl when she was alone at her home in a remote village near Nuru – around 180 kilometres from Ranchi -- and threatened her with a gun.

“The girl snatched a loaded fire-arm from the offender’s possession when he tried to rape her after assaulting her sexually. We have seized the weapon from the girl’s home on Tuesday. A case has been registered against the accused Nagendra Singh,” said Panki police station officer-in-charge Lalit Kumar.

The woman and her mother approached the police on Tuesday and registered a complaint, while handing over the weapon to the authorities. The accused is absconding and police sources said raids are going on to arrest Kumar.

Police are still ascertaining the veracity of the claims made by the woman, said Palamu superintendent of police Mayur Patel.

“The courage shown by the girl is exemplary. It shows a ray of hope for the girls at a time when the entire Jharkhand is rocked by the incidents of assault on the modesty of the fair-sex,” said Birndra Kumar, a local social worker.
