Actress Angelina Jolie has told the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, that she is ashamed the US has not yet signed a UN charter which protects children's rights.

Jolie was speaking at the event as a goodwill ambassador for the UN refugee agency. She said: "I am absolutely ashamed Washington has not formally ratified the 1989 UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Being an American I think it's horrible. I think Congress should ratify that. If we really care about that how dare we not ratify it?" contactmusic.com reported.

The US signed the charter in 1995 but has yet to ratify the treaty.

Jolie also spoke of her first hand experience at refugee camps. She said: "It was a whole different world for me. Children should have an education. People should have a right to seek asylum. This has become very important to me."
