The beleaguered Kapil Dev will soon have to make one more choice. The former Indian skipper is the general secretary of the UT Cricket Association (UTCA) Chandigarh and his continuation in that capacity seems highly unlikely after his joining the Indian Cricket League (ICL).

“The matter will come up in the annual general meeting of the association,” said UTCA official SS Bawa when asked if the association would retain Kapil as its general secretary.

Sources, however, revealed that the general mood in the association was to sack Kapil. “We had roped in Kapil to help us get the affiliation from the BCCI. But his joining the ICL has created a queer situation for us and I don’t think he can now continue as general secretary,” said a source.

UTCA, it may be mentioned, isn’t affiliated to the BCCI and has been pressing its case with the Board for nearly three decades. In fact, Kapil was made the general secretary in 2002 to use his clout and stature to achieve this objective.

But with Kapil jumping on to the ICL bandwagon, the UTCA has found itself on the crossroads. Now, if Kapil continues as its general secretary, the BCCI would further harden its stance on granting them affiliation. That’s something the association can’t afford.
