Kerala Assembly Speaker G Karthikeyan dies

Veteran Congress leader and Kerala Assembly Speaker G Karthikeyan, who was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Bengaluru for liver related ailments, passed away on Saturday morning.

Kerala legislative assembly Speaker G Karkthikeyan (66) died in a private hospital in Bangalore on Saturday after prolonged illness. A prominent Congress leader he was the state minister on two occasions.

A grassroots leader he entered politics through Kerala Students’ Union, student wing of the Congress. A firebrand leader he was heading the ‘reformist group’ of the party in early nineties opposing veteran leader K Karunakaran’s move to anoint his son K Muralidharan at the helm of the party.

He is survived by his wife and two sons. His body will be brought to the state capital in a chartered plane later in the evening. Kerala Governor Justice Sathasivam, Chief Minister Ooomen Chandy and former Defence Minister A K Antony condoled the death of the leader.
