A new technical university is to come up in Kerala as part of the government's attempt to overhaul the educational sector.

The proposed university will be the umbrella body for all science and technological institutions in the state, Left Democratic Front (LDF) convenor Vaikok Viswan told reporters here Monday night.
"Research activities are not taking place in right earnestness. We have decided to strengthen it in a big way," he said.
"We also want to see that Kochin University is upgraded as the Indian Institute of Engineering, Science and Technology," said Viswan.
The government also wants to convert 104 government schools as model institutions with the full support of parents, teachers and students, he said.
