Khawbung assembly constituency shot in fame after Mizo National Front chief and present Chief Minister Zoramthanga won from here in last elections. He, however, vacated this seat to retain Champai seat which had also gone into its kitty.

Mizo National Front (MNF) retained Khawbung seat in the 1999 by polls, which were necessitated by Zoramthanga vacating the constituency.

MNF's K Vanlalauva, an associate of former Mizoram chief minister Laldenga, defeated his nearest Congress rival B Zaliana by a margin of 2,345 votes in the by-poll. That was
his third win from Khawbung. He had earlier won the seat in 1987 and 1989. The by-poll result had helped ruling MNF to achieve simple majority in the 40-member Mizoram Assembly.

Vanlalauva is likely to contest from this seat once again.
