Mizo National Front (MNF) retained Khawbung seat in the 1999 by polls, which were necessitated by Zoramthanga vacating the constituency.

MNF's K Vanlalauva, an associate of former Mizoram chief minister Laldenga, defeated his nearest Congress rival B Zaliana by a margin of 2,345 votes in the by-poll. That was
his third win from Khawbung. He had earlier won the seat in 1987 and 1989. The by-poll result had helped ruling MNF to achieve simple majority in the 40-member Mizoram Assembly.

Vanlalauva is likely to contest from this seat once again.
