THE KANPUR Municipal Corporation (KMC) employees called off their indefinite strike on Monday, after the authorities accepted most of their demands. The KMC employees, under the banner of Sanyukt Karamchari Sangh, went on an indefinite strike from March 3, following the failure of their dialogue with municipal commissioner Arvind Singh, on March 2.

The KMC employees, under the banner of Sanyukt Karamchari Sangh, went on an indefinite strike from March 3, following the failure of their dialogue with municipal commissioner Arvind Singh, on March 2.
The employees were demanding three months’ pending salary, regularisation of pension and an FIR against the chief account officer (CAO) PN Singh for his alleged involvement in misappropriation of the State Finance Commission funds. The KMC authorities’ attempts to end the strike through dialogues failed to yield any results.
Gauging the mood of the employees, additional municipal commissioner I Raghvendra Vikram Singh, as per the directive of the municipal commissioner, invited the union leaders to a dialogue. An agreement between the management and the employees was signed when the union climbed down from their earlier demand for three months’ salary to two months’.
As per the agreement, the employees would be paid salary till the month of January through cheques by March 8. The KMC authorities also agreed to pay increased 3 per cent DA in cash by March 8. A sum of Rs 800 would be paid to each employee as DA on March 8. The KMC authorities also accepted the demand for sending the pension cheques on priority basis.
The KMC authorities also agreed to disburse two months’ salary to safai karamcharis who are working on on contract through cheques. Besides, the KMC municipal commissioner agreed to cancel the penal action taken against a few employees during the strike period. The Municipal Commissioner suspended two employees during the strike.
Regarding their demand for an FIR against the CAO, the municipal commissioner assured the employees leader of taking an appropriate action after the inquiry. The municipal commissioner directed the AMC to submit reports within 15 days on priority basis.
