The murder of a well-heeled young man, who was found with his throat slit, and the gangrape of a shanty dweller left Kolkatans shocked on Saturday.
While a 25-year-old woman was allegedly gangraped by three men in the wee hours of Friday after she was dragged out of her shanty along Strand Bank Road by the Ganges, 25-year-old Ankit Desai's body was found the same day from a Chevrolet Optra car.
The car had been parked with the body for almost 40 hours near the Lake Town traffic police booth on VIP Road. On Friday, police cut through the car's rubber lining, removed the window glass and opened the door from the inside to find Desai reclining on the back seat, his throat slit.
Beside the semi-decomposed body was found a blood-spattered woman's handkerchief. A blood-stained knife and two cellphone cases lay by the youth who was known for his flashy lifestyle after he inherited a fortune following his father's death two years ago.
Desai was a resident of Vaishali Apartments on Puddapukur Road in south Kolkata and lived with his widowed mother. The car belonged to a neighbour from whom he had hired it Tuesday.
Police Saturday said that Hardik, a friend of Desai, was arrested and soon coughed up information that four of his associates were involved in the crime and in all probability for money.
In the other incident at Jyotinagar colony of Chitpur in north Kolkata, a woman was dragged out of her shanty on Friday and raped by three men till her screams alerted neighbours.
The victim, a daily wage labourer who used to live with her mother after the recent death of her husband, was also slashed with a knife, but survived. Neighbours nabbed one of the rapists and beat him up before handing him over to police.
