Daughter of the late Haryana leader Chaudhry Dalbir Singh, Kumari Selja is the Congress's mascot for youth, Dalits and women, all rolled into one.
From her college days, Selja worked on issues like illiteracy and untouchability, organising village gatherings (melas) to promote inter-caste and inter-community interaction.
In 1990, she became the joint secretary of the All-India Mahila Congress. In 1991, she was elected from Sirsa constituency in Haryana. She was made the Minister of State for Human Resource Development (Department of Education and Culture) in 1992.
She is keen on working in areas like environment, especially for the regeneration of ecologically degraded lands.
