Kurien to attend AU, GBPSSI functions

FATHER OF White Revolution and Allahabad Central University's first Chancellor, Padma Vibhushan Dr Verghese Kurien, arrived in the city on his maiden visit to AU on Saturday evening.

He will participate in a function at AU's Govind Ballabh Pant Social Science Institute (GBPSSI) being organised to commemorate its 27th Foundation Day and the 119th birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Pt Govind Ballabh Pant on September 10.

AU Vice-Chancellor Prof RG Harshe will preside over the function.

A number of dignitaries including President APJ Abdul Kalam, Vice-President Bhairon Singh Sekhawat, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav have sent their greetings on the occasion, informed GBPSSI Registrar AR Mishra.

Meanwhile, AU held a high-level meeting this morning, presided over by AU VC Prof Harshe, to chalk out details of the function to be held in the varsity's Senate Hall at 4.30 pm on Monday to commemorate the Chancellor's first visit.

The meeting, attended by a number of teachers and officials including chairman of the Board of Trustees Prof GK Rai, Head of the Music and Performing Arts department Prof SB Sharma, CPIO Prof Amrendra Singh, Prof PK Ghosh, Dr Ajai Jaitley, Dr AC Pandey, Finance Officer S Parabramaiah, Estate Officer Shoaib Ahmed, security officer AP Singh and Engineer Navin Kumar, decided that teachers of AU's Constituent Colleges, Motilal Nehru Medical College and AU's Executive Council members will also be invited along with AU teachers to attend the function.

Senior varsity teachers, Head of Psychology department Prof Janak Pandey and head of Arabic and Persian department Prof AQ Jafari—two AU teachers to have been honoured with prestigious awards for their academic contributions since the varsity regained its Central status—will be felicitated by the Chancellor on the occasion.

Prof Janak Pandey has been made a honorary fellow and felicitated by the International Association of Cross-Cultural Psychology at the 18th International Congress of the Association held at Greece in July 2006. Prof Pandey has also served as the president of the body from 1994 to 1996.

Prof AQ Jafari was awarded the 'Certificate of Honour in Persian' by the President APJ Abdul Kalam at the Rastrapati Bhawan on December 25.

AU CPIO Prof Amrendra Singh informed that the AU Chancellor flew from Delhi to Varanasi and was received there by the AU Registrar Firdous A Wani who then escorted him to Allahabad in a car.
