He was settled there for almost a year.

Deepak’s family and neighbours in Kurukshetra’s New Lakshman Colony were in mourning after getting the news. His father, Sharvan Sharma, told Hindustan Times on Tuesday that Deepak was killed by a gang for money. “I got a call from the (Indiana) police yesterday at 6 pm,” he said. “They told me that Deepak was rushed to the hospital where he died.”

The police found Deepak’s cell phone lying near him on the street and contacted his family in Haryana, Sharvan said. The family ruled out that Deepak had any enmity overseas.

Sharvan, a marginal farmer, called up Deepak’s employer, a Punjabi, who confirmed the shooting and assured help in flying the body to India. Sharvan said he did not know how to contact the US police, and appealed to the Indian authorities to help the family get the body back for the last rites.

The family was financially dependent on Deepak, the eldest of three siblings. This was Deepak’s third stint in the US, the family said.
