At a meeting with Indian Navy and Army personnel who were working in the tsunami-hit areas of Sri Lanka, Kumaratunga praised India for coming to Sri Lanka's rescue "first" and "unstintingly" and described the Indian personnel's contribution as "immense".

She then said that she "hoped" further possibilities of India-Sri Lanka cooperation in the field for rehabilitation and reconstruction would be worked out "soon".
