Vivek and Tanu ran away from their homes and were staying as husband and wife. The media had reported that the Collectorganj police had picked up the couple on February 14 from the Kalyanpur area. However, the police filed an FIR stating that Tanu was 16-years-old and therefore Vivek had abducted her. Tanu was kept in police custody at the Mahila Police Station for a day. However, without producing Tanu before the court, she was handed over to her parents, general secretary of the association Ratan Agarwal alleged. This, he claimed, was violation of legal norms.

Agarwal further alleged that the police had kept the girl in police custody but the same had not been recorded anywhere. The police had only produced Vivek in court. “Therefore, the court has been misled,” Agarwal added. Agarwal said police officials of Sonebhadra, who came for transit remand, has been suspended following publication of the news in a Hindi daily.

He said the Kanpur police should be punished for acting unduly. “The police was instrumental in separating the husband and wife. The police action may adversely affect the couple’s married life,” Agarwal added.

Demand turned down: Agitated over the arrest of father and son allegedly involved in killing of the son’s wife for want of dowry, shopkeepers of the Kidwai Nagar market led by a local Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leader had verbal duel with the police at Kidwai Nagar police station. They were demanding immediate release of father and son from the custody.

According to reports, Harpreet, son of Santosh Singh and a resident of B-Block Kidwai Nagar married Ajeet Kaur, daughter of Satnaam Singh, a resident of New Delhi, two years ago.. Ajeet died at the house of her in-laws under mysterious circumstances a few months ago.

Later, Satnaam Singh registered a case with the Kidwai Nagar Police alleging that Harpreet and Santosh Singh killed his daughter when she could not fulfill their dowry demand. Since then the police were in search of Harpreet. On Sunday, acting on a tip off, the police arrested Harpreet from Lucknow. They also arrested Santosh on Monday morning. The Father and son were lodged in Kidwai Nagar police station.

As soon as the news of their arrest spread, the local traders got agitated and about 40 traders led by Nirmal Tripathi, a local BJP leader, reached the police station. There they had verbal duel with the officials when they did not fulfill their demand to release the duo.

Three years ago, Harjeet’s first wife also died under mysterious circumstances.
