Adam Gilchrist will lead the side in the absence of Ricky Ponting who was earlier ruled out of the first of four Tests with a thumb injury.
Lehmann, who was in Australia for personal reasons, was expected to rejoin the squad in Mumbai on Wednesday but a flight delay has affected his schedule and would now reach India on Thursday morning.
The delayed arrival was likely to keep him out of the three-day tour opener against Mumbai at the Brabourne stadium from Sep 30 to Oct 2.
The left-handed middle order batsman, who was a huge success on the Australians' successful visit to Sri Lanka recently by garnering 375 runs in five innings -- including two centuries and one half century -- has played one Test earlier on Indian soil, at Bangalore in 1997-98.
