Kuzhandavelu (65) and Ramapandi (50) of Kidatirukai village died of the disease on Tuesday, they said.

As many as 75 others are suffering from the disease in the village, they added.

Meanwhile, a team led by S Kumar, an expert from the Zonal Vector-Borne Diseases centre, has conducted a detailed survey in the area.

People would have been infected by drinking water which contained traces of rats' urine, Kumar said.

The drinking water was now being treated with chemicals before supplying, he said.

The water pipes were found cracked at several places and they were being repaired, he added.
