In August 2008, accused Asha Gaikwad had a fight with neighbour Anitha Shingade.

Later, on September 3, both were on their way to attend a Ganpati function in Ramji Nagar slum. While entering the house, Shingade accidentally pushed Gaikwad.

An argument ensued and Gaikwad picked up a blunt object and hit Shingade on her head. She then brought a can of kerosene, poured it over Shingade and set her ablaze.

Shingade succumbed to her burns three days after she was admitted to Rajawadi hospital.

The prosecution questioned the neighbours at the chawl and found that the accused often fought with them. According to the Ghatkopar police the neighbours had also complained about her to the police on several occasions.

The prosecution also produced the forensic reports and the medical reports that proved that Gaikwad had attacked Shingade.
