IT'S AN achievement that is winning laurels for Allahabad's Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT-A) not just in India but around the world.

Thanks to the hardwork and the intellect of the Deemed University's students, TriNetra— a live Web casting service launched from the IIIT-A network— has made it possible for the Institute to webcast events live on Internet and enable users to view the live proceedings of ongoing events round the globe.
"The service is the result of the combined efforts of INDEM, the institute's Networking team and the THUNDERBOLT, the Audio and Lights Club of IIIT-A.
The idea was coined by our director Dr MD Tiwari for the All India Vice-Chancellors' Meet held in November 2005. But the continuous and untiring efforts of the Thunderbolt, TriNetra and INDEM team members have made it to touch the sharp edges of the technology itself," informs a proud Ratnesh Pandey, a BTech Vth Semester student, who is the president of the TriNetra team.
Ratnesh says the service is an outcome of efficient but extensive phase-wise implementation and conceptualisation of the whole idea by the students under the guidance of Mithilesh Mishra and Balwant Singh, members of technical cell of IIIT-A.
"The final action plan was implemented after rigorous testing carried over the time with various hardware and software solutions. The final implemented solution consists all together of a basic peer to peer network set-up between a system installed at the actual venue connected to high end server which could be accessed globally," Ratnesh informed.
He said that the input from the camera and other capturing devices is interfaced through a capture card installed on the system which generated the digitised stream. "A software encoder on the system is used to encode the digitised stream making it suitable for transfer over the underlying network. On receiving the stream the server makes it possible for users sitting round the globe to access the streams with an observed worst case delay of 30 seconds or less between the actual event and that observed by the user in places where the network connectivity is poor," he added.
The TriNetra team also provides on-the-spot on-line instant assistance to various users to rectify any problem on the receiving end during a Web cast.
This feature comes as a rescue for non-technical users with the provision of step by step interactive assistance given by the team members.
IIIT-A Director Dr MD Tiwari, happy with the performance of the students, said that TriNetra has come as a gift to all the alumni who cannot be a part of an event being hosted by their alma mater.
He informed that during Webcasts, former students from high tech cities like Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune, Gurgaon, Noida and Hyderabad often take a day off from their hectic schedules and gather together in groups to watch an event live giving them a feeling of on-spot presence.
"Even alumni from overseas universities such as Carnegie Mellon, Stanford , MIT, Texas and various other places caught the action live on their screens during the convocation function that was webcast. Server logs also recorded hits from various other top-notch institutions and professional enterprises," Dr Tiwari added.
