Following the incident, Dr Gautam has charged a dozen of medicos of insulting him by calling him from a particular caste. The Medical Superintendent had a virtual fight with the medicos after he was caught inspecting the ward number 20 in an inebriated state and had even slapped some of the residents late last night.

Soon after the incident, the medicos gheraoed him and looking at the mounting tension in the orthopedic ward, all senior officials including GSVM Medical College principal Dr SK Katiyar, Dean students affairDr Sushil Chandra and Chief Medical Superintendent Dr PN Vajpayee rushed to the site.

The hospital authorities summoned the police to arrest Dr Gautam in the same
night. Even in the police custody, Dr Gautam was reportedly sitting in a drunken state and was grumbling. He was released in the wee hours today.

In a bid to safeguard his image, he called a pres meet and briefed the newsmen about his proposed hunger strike.

Dr Gautam said, “The Principal and the CMS following pressure from the junior doctors acted unfairly and handed me over to police. I am being isolated in the incident because I belong to a reserved category.”

Interestingly, the department head of orthopedics also hails from a particular caste and in the entire incident his enigmatic silence has set the rumor mill galore.

Surprisingly, the office-bearers of the Junior Doctors Association have decided to take the things lightly until some actions are taken against them.

Talking to HT, JDA president Dr Kamta Prasad said, “We will act according to the directives of Dr Katiyar. We all know that he is our administrator and whatever he does will be for the welfare of medicos.”

Dr Gautam has been notorious in the hospital for his deeds. Earlier, a disciplinary action was taken against him following reports by some girl students, who were staying in the hostel in the medical college.

They accused Dr Gautam of misbehaving with them in the hostel when he was called upon to check a sick girl student.
