"This is a horrific natural disaster, unprecedented in its geographic reach, that has claimed the lives of over 150,000 people. The affected countries face a very difficult struggle in coming to terms with the disaster," Mittal said in a statement released in New Delhi.
The donation would be made available to a variety of aid organisations and relief efforts, especially long-term rehabilitation in damaged areas of India and Indonesia.
In addition, Ispat Indo, the steel company in Indonesia owned by the Mittal family, has donated $100,000 to relief efforts in that country, besides pledging 50 tonnes of steel and making available 100 employees as aid volunteers.
