For a sequence in the film, the actor who is working with Ash in both the Hindi and Tamil versions of Mani Ratnam’s Raavan, has dressed like Aishwarya and danced to the songs Taal se taal mila from Taal and Dola re from Devdas.

Vikram says he was skeptical about cross-dressing and dancing, but the audience reaction has come as a pleasant
surprise. “I was quite embarassed about dressing like a girl… but my director was keen that I do it and it paid off. People start whistling and cheering even before I start the dance in the scene. Just the sound of my anklet gets such strong applause. It is great to know that people are flocking to theatres just to watch that sequence,” he says.

He has even got congratulatory messages from stars down South. “They say they almost thought it was some debutante in the film,” he laughs.

Says Shriya Saran, Vikram’s co-star in Kanthaswamy, “It is great fun to watch that sequence as a viewer, since I am not a part of it. Even its shoot was hilarious. We all laughed and clapped as Vikram pranced around dressed like Aishwarya Rai seducing all these men.”

And what does Aishwarya think about his imitation? “I don’t know, but honestly a real tribute would be if I do a great job in the two versions of Raavan. In the Tamil version, I am cast opposite her — in the role Abhishek plays in the Hindi version. She is such a wonderful actress, so celebrated down south. Only a good performance alongside her can be a tribute.”Who’s that girl?
