IN A bid to check the prevailing anarchy, the Lucknow University (LU) and seven of its affiliated degree colleges have decided to close their campuses sine die with immediate effect. Also, a notification cancelling students union elections (scheduled for December 16) in the LU and the seven colleges, has been issued. The LU administration has also directed all the hostellers to vacate the hostels within 24 hours.
This is after 30 years that LU has been closed sine die. Last time such a step was taken during the 1973-74 session when a few buildings on the university campus were torched.
The Friday decision came soon after the V-C and the principals of the seven colleges met Governor TV Rajeswar to apprise him of the prevailing situation. The degree colleges are Shia PG College, Lucknow Christian College, JNPG College, BSNVPG College, Kali Charan PG College, Vidyant PG College and DAV PG College.
Talking to media persons at his residence, LU V-C RP Singh said: “I’ve complete support of the governor who has asked me to assess the situation and take a legitimate decision. I’m committed to get rid of the criminal elements, whose number has increased manifold over the last few years.”
He reiterated that the elections (whenever it is held) would be held strictly in accordance with the interim verdict of the Supreme Court based on the Lyngdoh panel recommendations. When asked as to what prompted him to get the hostels vacated, the V-C said that hostels had become safe haven for criminals.
“We urge the director general of police and the district administration to deploy adequate amount of forces in the university and the colleges so that there is no damage caused to any individual or property by the student leaders. We also urge the DGP to deploy the Rapid Action Force and the CRPF on the campuses,” the V-C said.
The V-C justified the decision to also close the degree colleges sine die.
He said the law and order situation inside the campuses were not conducive to carrying out academic activities smoothly. The prevailing situation could be controlled only by taking such tough measures.”
“We would ensure that the varsity and its affiliated colleges are run in a disciplined manner so that the aspirations of more than one lakh well-meaning students are fulfilled.”
The V-C took a dig at the student leaders having gunners and requested the district administration to withdraw them and cancel the arm licences of these student leaders. “We urge that an IPS officer should be posted to look after the law and order situation on each campus,” the V-C and the principals said.
Meanwhile, angry student leaders burnt the effigy of the Vice-Chancellor. They raised slogans against him and demanded for his ouster.
