Janakrani, 45, jumped into the pyre of her husband Prem Narayan, 48, last afternoon after family members and villagers left the site on completion of the deceased's last rites, they said.

Narayan had died following prolonged illness. Police said the woman committed the act of her own volition and no attempt was made to glorify it as 'sati'.

Janakrani left her house on some pretext and her charred body was later found on her husband's pyre after a search was carried out, police said adding that villagers had immediately informed authorities of the incident.

A senior police official has rushed to the spot, they said adding that no case has been registered so far.
