The deceased, Vinod Pawar, was on leave and had arrived at his native place Sayyadnagar in Sakri tehsil, police said.
A group of around 10 people on Friday allegedly tried to molest his cousin. When Pawar intervened and tried to protect her, the assailants attacked him with knives.
Eight of the alleged assailants, including group’s leader Dnyaneshwar Rathod, have been arrested.
