Major fire breaks out in main market

Nearly a hundred shops were gutted and property worth lakhs of rupees destroyed in a major fire that broke out in a city market in Kanpur, Fire brigade officials said on Sunday.

Nearly a hundred shops were gutted and property worth lakhs of rupees destroyed in a major fire that broke out in a city market in Kanpur, Fire brigade officials said on Sunday.

The incident occurred late on Saturday night when the fire which started from a shop engulfed the entire main market at Parade Bazar due to strong wind, the officials said.

Apart from killing dozens of livestocks at various meat and chicken shops, the blaze destroyed about 100 make-shift stalls of garments, footwears and stationery in the market situated near Ramleela Maidan, they said, adding that twenty firetenders were rushed to the spot which took more than three hours to check the fire with the help of the army and police.

Meanwhile, an inquiry has been initiated to probe the cause of fire and additional police force has been deployed in the area to maintain calm, Deputy Inspector General of police Hariram Sharma said.
