The spokesman said Malik was arrested at Mirgund in northern town of Pattan. “Following the programme of Mutahida Majlis I Mashawarat, Yasin Malik was scheduled to lead a protest rally today at Sopore,” said the spokesman.
A large number of security forces were deployed along with national highway to stop Yasin Malik and others from reaching Sopore.
“Our front delegation was first stopped by forces at Narbal crossing but our caravan evaded that blockade. As soon as caravan reached Mirgund, police and forces stopped us from going ahead,” said the spokesman. “On the occasion, Yasin Malik and others staged a sit-in at the road, resulting in traffic remaining closed on the highway for about an hour. Police arrested Yasin and others and shifted them to Pattan but later on shifted them back to Mirgund camp,” he said.
The protest was planned to raise a “collective voice in to demand mortal remains of martyr Mohammad Maqbool Bhat and Mohammad Afzal Guru”.
