The incident took place Tuesday evening when one Kalu Vasava (33), enticed the girl from the neighbouring house and took here to the fields on outskirts of the village, they said.
According to police, it was in the fields that Vasava raped the girl and later smashed her head with a stone which could have resulted in her death.
They said Vasava then took the girl's body and buried it a pit near the Narmada irrigation canal and went back to his house.
When the girl did not return till late evening her parents started looking for her and informed the police, they said, adding, that Wednesday morning some villagers told the girl's parents that they had seen her with Vasava on Tuesday.
During interrogation, Vasava revealed what he had done, following which body of the seven-year-old girl was recovered and sent for postmortem, police said.
Vasava, who hails from Surat and come to stay with his relative here, has been booked for murder and rape of minor, they said, adding further investigation in the matter was on.
