Man dies due to police brutality

DEATH OF a 55-year-old man due to alleged police brutality in Kareli area led to a road blockade and gherao of the Daraganj police station on Tuesday. Members of the deceased?s family and hundreds of residents of the area staged a demonstration under the leadership of deputy mayor Anamika Chaudhari. A few weeks ago, five of a family were burnt alive in Sadiyapur and Mahendra was named as accused in the incident. Mahendra is still absconding and Kareli police are desperately looking for him.

DEATH OF a 55-year-old man due to alleged police brutality in Kareli area led to a road blockade and gherao of the Daraganj police station on Tuesday. Members of the deceased’s family and hundreds of residents of the area staged a demonstration under the leadership of deputy mayor Anamika Chaudhari.

A few weeks ago, five of a family were burnt alive in Sadiyapur and Mahendra was named as accused in the incident. Mahendra is still absconding and Kareli police are desperately looking for him. Dilip Nishad, a resident of Bakshi under Daraganj police station and a relative of Mahendra, was taken into custody by Kareli police for interrogation on January 5.

The accused was beaten to such an extent that he had to be admitted to Preeti Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on Monday night. Hearing the news of his death, hundreds of relatives and friends gathered at the hospital. Later, the mob led by deputy mayor Anamika Chaudhary, gheraoed the Daraganj police station, held a road blockade and raised slogans against the police. CO Colonelganj and the city magistrate rushed to the site. The protesters demanded registration of a case against CO Kareli and sub inspector Pankaj Pandey.

The city magistrate assured them of action against the guilty.
