AN IRATE mob went on the rampage following the death of two motorcycle-borne youths in a road mishap at Mandideep on Sunday evening.
Furious over delay in policemen reaching the spot, angry residents set fire to the truck that hit the motorcycle, and stoned the police station. They smashed windowpanes of parked vehicles and stoned passing trucks, buses and cars. Around half-a-dozen people were injured in the stone-pelting.
The truck (MP 19/A-7973) hit the motorcycle at 4:30 pm near Bhoj Hotel on the National Highway when Shailu, 35, and Ramlochan, 28, were returning to Satlapur. Ramlochan died on the spot and Shailu on way to hospital. Both were residents of Mandideep.
Police force was not adequate to quell the mob. Passengers of a bus scurried for cover on the premises of a bank. Firefighters that reached here from Bhopal were attacked. Three firefighters — Riyazuddin, Nafis and Shahid Mohammad — were injured. A child who was going with his mother was also injured.
The bodies of the accident victims remained on the spot for almost two hours. The shops downed their shutters as the mob ruled the streets. Later SDOP Nimisha Pandey and SDM Rakesh Tiwari reached the area and patrolling vehicles were pressed into service to control the situation.
Around 9 pm, Raisen district Collector and SP reached Manideep. A ompensation of Rs 5,000 each was sanctioned to the next of the kin of the deceased.
