Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati will give away the Indian GP winner's trophy. Under sporting rules, the award is presented by the head of state or Prime Minister of the host country.

But the event's organisers said they didn't get a response from the PM and the PM's office said it did not recall getting an invite.

Meanwhile, sports minister Ajay Maken will be conspicuous by his absence at Sunday's race.

"I didn't expect an invite because I refused the F1 organisers tax exemption," he said.

But Jaypee Sports India said an invitation had been sent to the minister.
