Congress on Monday said UP Chief Minister Mayawati invoked NSA against BJP leader Varun Gandhi for 'political purposes', but refused to say whether the decision was right or wrong.
"Yes, she used it for political purposes. The BSP is hand in glove and in conspiracy with BJP on this...," party spokesman Kapil Sibal told reporters in New Delhi, adding, "If it was not for political advantage, she (Mayawati) would not have used it".
Sibal said the Central government too had the powers to invoke NSA but it did not do so.
Responding to a query on the case, which is in the Supreme Court, and the party's stand on it, Sibal said it was between the court and the petitioner.
On the comfort level of Congress if Varun comes out of jail, Sibal said, "Neither comfortable nor uncomfortable."
"NSA is used by the state government. It is the subjective satisfaction of the state government," he said.
Alleging that BJP was hand in glove with BSP, Sibal said the saffron party helped Mayawati form government thrice in UP.
"Which secularism are they talking about? They formed the government with BJP thrice," he said, asking the Left parties to look into the secular credentials of the Mayawati- led party.
