PUBLIC WORKS Development Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya dedicated the Rs 2.5 crore overhead tank at Sukhlia to the public on Tuesday evening.
Boasting a storage capacity of 7.5 million gallons the tank will benefit more than 20,000 residents of Lav-Kush Vihar, Veena Nagar, Prime City and Sunder Nagar.
Indore Municipal Corporation Chairman Shankar Lalwani, City BJP chief Ramesh Mendola, Mayor-in-Council member incharge of Waterworks Munnalal Yadav and Chandu Yadav were among those present on the occasion.
The decision to organise the programme while the Mayor was away in Delhi pressing for JNNNURM funding for the City raised several eyebrows and has once again underscored the fissures in the local BJP unit.
According to sources, the mayor decided not to attend the programme to protest alleged interference and meddling by corporators owing allegiance to Vijayvargiya. Until late on Monday evening senior leaders attempted to persuade the Mayor to return to Indore in time for the cereony.
The organisers even delayed the proceedings, originally scheduled for 7:30 pm, for over an hour. However when it became clear that the mayor wouldn’t arrive the programme was finally held at aound 9 pm.
When contracted MiC waterworks incharge denied that the programme was meant as a snub to the mayor. Yadav claimed that the programme had been approved by Dr Sharma who assured him that she would return from Delhi by 8 pm. “That is why we scheduled the dedication for 7: 30,” he pointed out.
