A team will visit the medical college from May 6 to May 25 for physical verification of various departments. Inspection is necessary for the institution to save its recognition.

The announcement of the dates has put the medical college administration in a tight spot. They have stepped up efforts to develop infrastructure to save the recognition of the college.

Vacant posts of professors and lecturers in various departments are a cause for concern for the college administration.

Sources said the first team of the MCI would visit the medical college on May 6 to inspect the skin, medicines and anaesthesia departments. On May 7, the team will inspect the surgery department. On May 15, the team will inspect the paediatric department, on May 20 the ophthalmic department and on May 24 and 25, the pathology department.

The MCI team will inspect eight departments and decide the future course of action on the basis of available resources and the number of teachers. Though Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav had categorically assured that recognition of the only medical college of the region would be saved, 50 per cent posts of lecturers remained vacant.

In September 2002, the Medical Council of India had issued a warning to derecognise the degrees of the medical college for its failure to adhere to norms set by the MCI.

Since then, there was uncertainty over the future of the medical college. But, the State Government’s initiative had given people of the region a ray of hope.

The State Government has earmarked Rs 60 crore to develop infrastructure in the medical college. Earlier, the MCI had slashed the number of postgraduate seats in orthopaedic surgery, pathology and medicine departments. With this directive, the future of nearly half-a-dozen PG seats in various departments is in a limbo.
