?Mediocre students a dejected lot
THE NEW academic session will prove to be very trying for students who have passed intermediate examinations with second or third divisions, as they will have to face difficulty in getting admission to degree colleges affiliated to Chhatrapati Sahu Ji Maharaj University (CSJMU). Even those students who have obtained good second divisions will not feel relaxed till they get admission to degree courses.

THE NEW academic session will prove to be very trying for students who have passed intermediate examinations with second or third divisions, as they will have to face difficulty in getting admission to degree colleges affiliated to Chhatrapati Sahu Ji Maharaj University (CSJMU). Even those students who have obtained good second divisions will not feel relaxed till they get admission to degree courses.
According to a rough estimate, out of a total of 57,124 students who have qualified the class XII examination from different Boards, there are 20,000 students with second, good second and third divisions. The rest have distinctions and high first class marks.
However, at a recently held meeting of the student leaders here, they have decided to raise demand for reservation of at least five percent seats for second and five percent seats for third division students in every college. According to them, either the government should abolish second and third divisions or it should make necessary arrangements for the admission of mediocre students.
On the other hand, limited number of seats in the colleges affiliated with the CSJMU and the preferences of the colleges for extending admissions to meritorious students with high percentage, eliminated all possibilities of admission to students having low percentage.. It is expected that there will be a tough struggle between the first division and the meritorious students at every college for a single seat. It will not be possible for all the students to get accommodated amidst a total of 4,700 seats in all.
The only option left to these students is either to opt for self -financed colleges or to appear in graduate courses privately. They have another option of taking admission to various Open Universities and complete graduation through correspondence. But , very few students have shown interest in these universities during the past years. Instead of joining the open universities, they prefer to appear in the graduate examinations privately.
