AICC secretary Mabel Rebello said in the state capital that Sangma, holding the Home and Education portfolios in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government, owned moral responsibility for last Friday's firing and resigned from his post.

Sangma, one of the two deputy chief ministers in Lapang cabinet, submitted the resignation letter to the Chief Minister in Rebello's presence.

The firing by police and CRPF at Tura and Williamnagar in Garo hills region claimed nine lives and injured more than 100 people.
