When Gurunath Meiyappan’s wife and mother met him in the office of the property cell in the Mumbai crime branch on Tuesday, it was an emotional reunion as his wife Rupa and mother Lalitha could not hold back tears after seeing the downcast 37-year-old Chennai Super Kings official, who was arrested in connection with the betting and spot-fixing scandal.

They spoke for around 15 minutes, as per court orders, after which Rupa and Lalitha left around 3pm.

An officer said, “The two were taken to meet Meiyappan on the second floor office of the property cell, where he was interrogated. As they came face to face for the first time, Rupa and Lalitha, both had tears in their eyes after looking at Meiyappan, who was downcast.”

The officer said, “used to a life of luxury, Meiyappan has been sleeping on the floor in the crime branch lockup and has had the police canteen food since his arrest.” Meiyappan’s custody gets over on Wednesday when he will be produced before the local court.

Crime branch sources said they would be seeking further custody of Meiyappan as they want to interrogate him alongwith bookie Tinku Delhi and Vindoo Dara Singh.
