The state's Rann of Kutch area witnessed an unexpected meteorite shower and residents panicked after seeing a "big ball of fire" hurtling towards the earth.

Rajkot district official Ajay Chaudhary said that an object emitting bright light landed near Belasan village of Maliya Miyana block, 200 km from Ahmedabad, on Monday night.

According to reports, the heavenly body lit up several kilometres of the area like a floodlight and hit the Maliya Miyana block at around 9.00 pm. Mild tremors were also reported in the area.

Chaudhary said people described the meteor as a "great ball of fire" traversing across the sky.

Rajkot district authorities have brought ashes and stones from Maliya Miyana to the district headquarters for further investigation.

The meteoric object was also seen by people in the Jodia and Drol blocks of Jamnagar and Rapar, and Bachau block near the Kutch border.

However, no injuries have been reported after the meteorite shower.
