A MILD cane charge on Friday afternoon led to commotion at the Lily Talkies Square after the Samajwadi Party workers broke barricades in violation of the Section 144 imposed on the City during the ongoing assembly session.
Party’s youth wing leader Akhilesh Yadav was present on the spot during all this. Samajwadi Party leader Dr Sunilam alleged that at least 15 party workers, most of which were women, received injuries during the cane charge. Two of them sustained serious injuries, he claimed. He claimed that another party worker, Fulchand, suffered a heart attack during the stampede in the wake of the cane charge and was admitted to the ICU of the Hamidia Hospital. Medico-legal cases of 11 other party workers were also made.
However, Additional SP (City) G K Pathak, who was in-charge at the public meeting venue, denied cane charge. He said the SP workers had tried to break the barricades in violation of the Section 144. And as a large number of them thronged the barricades, a sort of stampede ensued, the police officer added. He, however, accepted that two women fell unconscious during the commotion and were taken for treatment. He said no formal complaint was lodged in this matter.
The incident occurred at around 1.30 pm after Akhilesh Yadav, UP women wing leader Ranjana Vajpayee and local SP MLAs addressed a gathering of people at the Yadgar-e-Shahjehani Park. The programme was the beginning of the SP agitation to get the names of eligible persons included in the Below Poverty Line list.
The leaders were supposed to meet Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan after the public meeting to submit him a memorandum. However, the leaders got delayed and later the entire gathering led by Yadav, Dr Sunilam and other MLAs tried to march towards the Roshanpura Square. At the Lily Talkies Square barricade, the police stopped them.
The party workers, however, got into an argument with the police and tried to break the barricade leading the police to use cane mildly just for a few minutes to push the crowd back.
The cane charge caused the people, especially the women, who were at the forefront, to run helter-skelter and a stampede-like situation occurred, leading to some injuries to some women.
Memoranda submitted: Later, the party delegation, led by Akhilesh Yadav met Shivraj Singh Chouhan and submitted him memoranda, including those demanding inclusion of eligible poor people in the BPL list, CBI enquiry into killing of Prof HS Sabharwal in Ujjain, installation of statue of Mama Baleshwardayal before the district collector office in Jhabua and renaming of Mahi Project at Jhabua-Dhar as Mama Baleshwardayal Project. The Chief Minister assured the delegation that suitable action would be initiated.
The delegation included SP national secretary Ompal Singh Nahar, MLAs Vijay Bahadur Singh Bundela, Vanshmani Prasad Verma, Arjun Palia, Vikram Singh Natiraja, K K Singh, Narayan Tripathi, Dr Sunilam and former MP Ramanand Singh.
