Around 5 am, a joint operation of special operation group, 22 Rashtriya Rifles and the CRPF 176 Battalion personnel cordoned off Krankshivan Naseem Bagh village in Sopore, 55 km north of Srinagar .

After the intelligence reports about the presence of militants, the security personnel zeroed in on a house.

"The militants opened fire at the search team, which was returned. The firefight continued for at least ten minutes," said a police officer.

One militant was killed in the retaliatory fire. One cop, constable Mohammad Rafiq, who tried to come close to the house was hit by the bullets. "The cop succumbed to his injuries later," said the spokesman.

More reinforcement was send to the spot later and the search operation was on for most part of the day. Later, the bodies of the militant and the constable were recovered from the spot.

Sources told the Hindustan Times that there were two more militants in the house who managed to escape. The slain militant is a local identified as Manzoor Ahmad of Sangrama area in north Kashmir. Sources said Ahmad had joined militant ranks just four months ago. The police have not identified the militant yet.
