Mining banned in Rajasthan Aravalli

Concerned over the ecological devastation of the Aravalli Hills, the Supreme Court on Friday banned mining in 157 mines in 15 districts of Rajasthan Rajasthan spread over 15,000 square kilometres, reports Satya Prakash.

Concerned over the ecological devastation of the Aravalli Hills, the Supreme Court on Friday banned mining in 157 mines in 15 districts of Rajasthan Rajasthan spread over 15,000 square kilometres.

A three-judge bench headed by Justice K.G. Balakrishnan also ordered the Forest Survey of India, Rajasthan government and the court-appointed Central Empowered Committee to prepare a satellite imagery of the entire Aravalli Range in Rajasthan to find out the extend of damage caused to the area.

The court ordered release of Rs 5 crore from Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management And Planning Authority (CAMPA) for the purpose. The report has to be submitted to the court within four months.
