Akiro Ito (7th and 68th minutes) turned out to be Japan's hero with a two-goal strike while Kazuyuki Ozawa (44th) and Hiroki Sakamoto (61st) struck one apiece for an improbable win for the Japanese.
Argentina, No 7 in the FIH World rankings, were left a shattered side and finished their league engagements with a tally of four points while Japan have three with a match against Spain to follow on Wednesday.
After Japan scored first, Argentina failed to build on a 2-1 and 3-2 advantage to taste their third defeat in five matches. Rodrigo Vila (32nd, 34th) and Lucas Camareri (46th) were the Argentine scorers.
