The CBI has registered the case against Munna Bajrangi, Mukhthar Ansari, Afzal Ansari, Aizaz Ahmed, Atta-ur-Rahman and Firdous under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and Arms Act for allegedly conspiring and murdering Rai, CBI sources said.

The case was handed over to the CBI by Allahabad High Court on May 23 after the wife of the deceased Alka Rai approached with a petition requesting for transfer of the case to the CBI as she was not happy with the progress made by the Uttar Pradesh police.

The legislator was shot dead in Ghazipur district on November 29, 2005.

However, the Uttar Pradesh Government had approached the Supreme Court challenging the order of the Allahabad High Court. This was dismissed by the Apex court on July 7, 2006.

The state had challenged the High Court order on the ground that the investigation into the case was over and chargesheet had already been filed.
