The Varanasi North legislator was, however, released on bail by the sessions court.

Ansari had allegedly assaulted additional district magistrate (Protocol) RK Singh at the latter's office on July 27 and had been absconding ever since.

Another accused in the case, corporator Manoj Rai Dhoopchandi, had surrendered before the court on Wednesday and he was granted bail.

Though after surrender, the MLA moved a bail plea in the court of CJM BK Jaiswal, the court had rejected the plea. Later, a similar plea was filed before Sessions Court judge VP Shukla, who granted him bail on two sureties of Rs 25,000 each.

Both Dhoopchandi and Anasri had allegedly misbehaved and attacked RK Singh at his office after he refused to issue a solvency certificate to a PWD contractor known to them.
