The State government has sanctioned Rs 4.65 crore to set up an ultra modern Cath Lab, equipped with latest apparatus and instruments at the Cardiology Department. If things go according to the plan the Cath Lab will start functioning in 2006 .

With the setting of the Cath Lab angiography and angioplasty will become possible at the medical college here. This means that patients will have to pay much less at the medical college to get these services. Whereas in private sector hospital the patient has to pay reportedly about Rs 1.15 lakh for a single stent angioplasty plus medicine and hospitalisation charges.

Apart from this, cardiac catheterisation and electro-physiology study of cardiac patients would also be conducted at the college. "This would benefit a large number of cardiac and other heart disease patients coming from as far as Nepal besides the neighbouring districts of Jaunpur, Fatehpur, Chitrakut, Rewa and Pratapgarh," said Dr PC Saxena, Head of Department of Cardiology and Principal MLN Medical College.

Dr PC Saxena said the cost of angiography and angioplasty still need to be worked out.

But one thing is for sure that angioplasty would be conducted at less than half the price charged by the private sector hospitals. Also after Lucknow and Kanpur, the MLN Medical College is the third place in the State to get Cath Lab facility, he added.

He also informed that daily at an average ten cardiac patients gets admitted to the Cardiology Department and many of them need immediate angioplasty due to blocked arteries.
