Mobile phones from various service providers, including BSNL, Airtel, Aircel, Reliance and Tata, fell silent around 9am across the Valley.

No official comment was available on whether the service providers had been directed to shut their services temporarily as part of the overall security drill connected with Aug 15.

Mobile phones across the Valley went without connectivity on this for a dayday last year as well.

In the past, separatists have used mobile phones to trigger remote controlled explosive devices in Jammu and Kashmir.
